Now you've got me wanting to "check under the hood" on my '74 4001AZ.

This must be one of those stragglers that went out in '75 with Grovers then. If it was Burg, I mourn for its demise, but I still kind of like the beaten and butchered beast it has become.

I've seen factory Grovers on an '86. They are reputed to have been backup tuners and were used when the standard ones were out of stock.

I've seen more Grovers on Ricks in the '80s than in late '70s. I had thought that either RIC had found a cache of them somewhere in a storage cupboard or that they decided to run with Grovers again on the understanding that any quality control issues had been ironed out. It's one of those little mysteries that keeps me awake at night.

What does this mean, exactly? Is there some reason people didn't like them?

They did not make many of either and for some reason they are usually perfect or totally messed up.

Ah, I see. I now have a better appreciation for my '76 Azureglo 4001, battle scarred with chips & dings, but definitely not totaled...
:D
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
