I'm one of those bozos that tends to take on affectations of whoever I'm talking to. For example, when I talk to my dad, ahh git a suthhern drawl. When I talk to Graham, I say "Cheers!" a lot. When I talk to Chris Clayton, we go into Jerky Boys speak. You get the idea.

Having said that, I used "ta" as a general "thank you!" to folks when in the UK last summer and no one slapped me, so I must have been using it right.
