Greetings everybody,

I'm new here, but as I stated in another thread I have been lurking for years, soaking up all the collective information, but with nothing useful to add or say.

However I must admit that my fav bass at the moment is an 81s, which I bought sight unseen over the net, and much to my surprise when I opened the case, had a set neck. Now I have been a rotosound RS 66 user for about 30 years, but for the last few years have been trying replacements....... Liking high tension strings, I strung this set neck bass up with D'Addarrio Pro Steels, and have had zero problems. even living in Denver, where cold dry winters wreck havoc on wood instruments. I have never even had to touch the truss rods on this bass after 4 years of using these strings, no shift in action, and no problems with intonation, wing seperation, or neck issues.

Perhaps I got lucky, but IMHO, there is really no reason to not own one of these basses, if i could find another jetglo S i would buy it in a heartbeat.

Welcome to the forum, Floyd! I also have a set of D'Addario Pro strings installed on my '81 4001S. I haven't changed those strings in almost 2 years. But it still sounded really good anyway at a jam session today.

My 81 4001s i used to own, had sustain for days and sounded like a jazz bass on steroids.

It certainly seems that many of the set neck basses are very good in regard to stability.

On my 4000 (without extra pickup hole) I get the best Hand vibrato's. (I conclude the neck is least stable of all my Ricks.)

Putting pressure on necks (ala vibrato or forced dive bombs) always scared the **** out of me . It never made sense to me to put that kind of strain on a neck . The 4001s i owned , had the thinnest, fastest, most resonent neck , ive ever had the pleasure of playing . I kick myself in the arse almost daily for parting with it

I will never do this using 2 hands, but moving my left hand back and forth a bit wont hurt much more than transporting my bass I always assumed.

obviously , its the amount of pressure you put on it . I've seen some some nutty things by bass players over the years . Whew ! gives me the willys just thinkin bout it.
