Mine's a week 31 Laredo, no problems whatsoever - it's a beauty, as all my Rics have been.

I'll echo most of what was said above as far as the tone of the 4004 vs. the 4001/3. A modern take on the traditional 4001/3 tone.....more clarity and a kick to the low end. When I owned several 4003's I was constantly tinkering with the electronics and swapping p/u's trying to get the "tone in my head" which I ultimately found when I received my first 4004 (my LK). I haven't looked back since.

the laredo has been said to be a perfect funk machine (from LA larry),the neck on my cii is one of the best i've ever played, with a little electronics work, more trebley, single coil tones can be coerced, and it has to be the most comfortable lightweight ergonomically designed rick bass, ever. also, i think this bass is more friendly for fingerstyle players than the traditional rick with all of its bulging metal peices....you should definitely check one out.....

Woody, based on what you just said, the ONLY thing keeping me from a 4004 is the pickup placement.
