I think the reason people are siding with the 4003 here is that recent examples have been SUPERB and because they are the most versatile passive basses around. The 4003 can also navigate just about any style--it's not a prog machine like people say it is. I use mine for jazz and R&B all the time. Outkast used one.

That's a no-brainer. Definitely get the 4003.
I second that motion.

Nothing wrong with that 3001 either, from what I've gathered. You're bound to be happy with either, but I would consider the best use of my money if I'm buying a player's instrument.

I'm in a similar dilemma. My dream instruments will always be out there, but right now I need practical instruments that are suited to my style and my musical ambitions overall.

All the best with your new bass! :D

Besides the 3001 is a bit overpriced, IMHO.

It's funny; I play in a blues/rock trio. Lots of Cream and Mountain, etc. At first I shied away from the 4003 in favor of Fenders and my 4004 because of the 4001/4003's reputation as a prog bass. Then I thought wait a minute -- this body shape was designed in 1957 during the early rock 'n roll heyday. It's perfect for almost any retro (or non-retro for that matter) style. I like the overall balance of the new 4003's a lot and that's with tone knob pressed in. These days I usually have my 4004 and 4003 on stage and my Fenders are still in their cases. Now all I need to get is a good A/B stomp box with EQ so I can switch between the two more quickly.

I'd definitely go for the 4003, especially if you want that classic rick sound and versatility, not to mention the way it looks.

Another good reason to get the 4003 is because in a few years, or whenever the economy gets better, the Blueburst finish will be very valuable.

I have been a member of this forum for years, and I believe this is the first time responses have been unanimous. I think you have your answer.

What I'd like to know is...How many of the people here recommending the 4003 over the 3001 have ever owned, played, or even heard a 3001?

I mean...the 4003 would have to be more versatile, most people prefer it's appearance, and it is the standard in Rick basses, but I'm just sayin...

I owned one about 10 years ago for a short time. It was a great player. To me, the look was more of the issue than the sound or feel. I prefer the classic Rickenbacker Bass styling.

Okay....There's one! Any others?

Not to play Devil's Advocate...I have many more 4001 derived Ricks than 3001 derived Ricks and the 4001/3 is THE quintessential Rick bass. But I like my 2030 GF also http://www.rickresource.com/register/vi ... ine%3Dtrue and the few 3001 owners who have posted on this forum seem to really like them. They're supposed to sound great. And the contoured body of the 3001 would have to be more comfortable than the 4003's sharp binding. And there's no gaping hole around the pickup and no pickup cover to remove. Sure...its appearance is not favored by most of us, but the 3001 does have it's redeeming qualities!

I say buy both and get to know them for a few months before you make your decision!
