Um, read your post again, Dane.... Older Rick volume is 250k, tone is 500k.... Transpose your values??

I am trying for a more growly/less bright sound.

i did the cap bypass surgery

UPDATE:
The paint is not taking well everywhere. Some persistant 'cracking' in spots. Like there is goo on the wood 'bleeding through'. :o

[sigh]

If i sand and spray light coats it gets better. I am working through that horrible sinking feeling i should not have taken this on...

You know the sign that says 'repairs....$100 If you tried to repair it......$250 '

So if you are considering doing this project as well =- THINK THREE TIMES before doing it.

2272? I thought I recognized that serial number! But mine is from April of '79:

Did you chemically strip the old paint with paint remover? If so, then you failed to remove every trace of the remover from the wood. Once dried and sanded, it's invisible and will keep any new paint from drying wherever it's present--usually manifested in streaks and spots of wet paint when most of the instrument has dried nicely.

The remedy is to-re-strip the paint and then scrub the entire instrument several times with #3 steel wool and fresh denatured alcohol. Then allow to dry, sand, and repaint.

i did not chem strip. i sanded it.

i think the old varnish bubbled through. OR the wipe down rag was contamintaed somehow. Or when i grabbed sandpapaer it may have had varnish on it from the first sand job. I am not sure. i changed everything (paint, rag, sandpapaer, temperature, etc.).

Re-sanding and painting over came it. No 'problems' now.

Everyone playing it is loving it! That tone, sustain and loooow action reels 'em in! :D
