Besides listening at night to WLS when I was in Peoria (IL), I'd also listen to KAAY out of Little Rock ... it was on that station, late one night on the way home from my second-shift job, that I heard Gilligan's Island/Stairway To Heaven.
BTW a similar phenomenon can occur with television sets in the VHF band, but this happens during the daylight hours, not at night. When I was living in San Diego, I would occasionally pick up a station from Corpus Christi, Texas; in Champaign-Urbana, I picked up a station or two in Canada (IIRC one in Saskatchewan).
