My '54 Combo 600's serial number is 8C416........so maybe the numbering system wasn't quite finalised at this early stage?

The back plate was coated with flock - which has a thin velvet feel to it.

The picture that Ron posted is actually a "flocking " material.

I just like to say that word...flocking.

My image quality is bad. All you see is a shell but I have all the parts in a padded bag. I replaced the rotting bakelite tuning buttons with plastic ones of that era. A truss rod cover needs to be made but a modern one won't fit. later.

Thanks for your info and help Graham, really man. You seem like a wild and crazy guy from your photos. You have too many guitars, you need to give some to me. I will post better pics to this post as I take them, details and the like. All this is for educational purposes. I will take one of the horseshoe pickup. Has one red wire and a solid copper wire. Do dual coils have two leads? thanks. I don't think its dual coil.

Yep - I would say it's a single coil (Combo 600) pick up........but the guitar seems to be set up for Combo 800 wiring?

Mine is wired like the Combo 600, with a Hole Plugged up in the body. My model probably helped develop the combo 600 since mine has a C600 pickup and wiring. Mine has single red wire and thats it. I have only 4 "lugs" on the bottom of pickup. This ones body has a hole drilled where the 2nd toggle was supposed to go, but alas, they covered it up with with a piece of aluminum. Either it was done this way in development, or some joker changed a dualcoil to a single coil??? I like to think this guitar is even more valuable because of this weird pickup flaw. Darn, I wish this had the dual capabilities but It don't, guess too early.
