Well...I no longer have any recent 4003's here to measure, but just for the halibut I measured the width of the nuts on a few of my basses and here's what I came up with:
July 1987 4003S: 1 19/32"
Aug 1987 4003S: 1 19/32"
July 1973 4001: 1 21/32"
2003 4001C64S: 1 11/16"
1989 4003S/5: 1 12/16"
2000 4003S/5: 1 25/32"
So I see 3/32" difference between my '87 4003S's and my 2003 4001C64S.
I didn't get exactly the same results as RIC states, but according to the RIC website, the 4003 is 1/16 wider than the C64 at the nut:

So Ted...could you please break out your Blackstar and compare it to your DCM? I'd be curious to see the results. I'm pretty sure that that little difference of 3/32" (plus the girth, of course) is the reason why I prefer the necks on my late '80's 4003's to the current ones. Maybe the late 70's and mid 60's Rick basses are similar in fret board width as you said, but I'm pretty sure that my late 80's Rick necks aren't as wide across the fret board as today's 4003's.
model/year with widest nut?
