Tommy, you will be quite pleased with your guitar when it comes back - Paul will do it right. Did I mention he is a perfectionist?

Yeah I hope it can be fixed, I could probably have done the work but I dont trust tightening the rods up and knowing when to stop...
I think it will prob need a set of rods, one appears to be shorter and by the time I got the rods out the acorn nuts basically fell apart...

Im ready to send her but Ive lost the email with the addy...PM sent Paul...

Update:

Tommy's 360/12 arrived today, and I've had a good look at it. Should be a trouble-free fix. This is one of the projects I work on while paint is drying between coats, or while the filler cures on the fretboard...so this weekend it should move along just fine.

Let's just get those rods straightened out, Tommy. My calendar is filled with refins and acoustic builds!

It'll be a sweet player.

What's happened, Tommy, is that somebody (who had no sensitivity to Rickenbackers, obviously) had torqued down the rods, in an attempt to "adjust" the neck, and snapped one or both. They were then replaced with hardware store all-thread rod (grade 2), in roughly two sizes too small. There is no way that this rod could put enough tension on the neck, and it would be likely to snap, too, with even less "persuasion" than the original rods.

The first thing I'll do, obviously, will be to measure the neck and fretboard, then install a set of proper rods. Then I'll slowly preload the neck and continue measuring, and eventually I'll get it to balance out and play like "buttah".

oh thats really messed up....I wonder what happened to the original rods?? Ive never actually pulled a Rickenbacker truss rod before so I didnt know what an original set looked like
I though they were kinda flimsy...

Do you have a pic of Rickenbacker rods or a link just for future Rickenbacker owners looking at this thread?

I knew something was up when someone mentioned tape was wrapped around the rods from the factory and it was missing but I figured the eBay bozo I bought the guitar from had tried the method described here on the forum because there is star washers down on the body end and the finish in places is odd like some glue dripage.

thanks t

Tommy, RIC does not put a picture of the rods on their Boutique site but here are drawings of them:
