Years back I was playing a gig and doing triple-duty on vocals, combo organ and guitar. This is before I had the Ric/Schaller strap locks on my guitar (the best idea in the world, EVER).

So I play my solo on the organ, hiked my guitar over the mic stand to get back to the mike without hitting the stand with the neck of my guitar, and of course, the guitar flew across the stage...and survived! No splintering.

Considering the almighty noise when the 360/6 hit the floor we were really suprised that there wasn't more damage.
We guessed that the actual damage to the guitar was from scraping the metal guitar stand and not from the floor, as the guitar ended up on it's back and the 2 chips are on the front sides.
The D string was way out of tune when we picked the guitar up, so we guess that tuner must have taken the force of the fall at the headstock end, but there's not a mark to be seen on it.
We can now put to bed the myth that Rics fall apart just by looking at them.

So, I guess us bass players are better off, only 4 pieces (or maybe 5).

I use an Ultimate stand, it seems very stable (and has been mentioned by JH as being a decent one if I recall correctly). It has a little keeper strap you can put across the neck to keep it from falling out.

Sorry to hear about the mishap, I'm sure it feels horrible...

Sorry to hear about this, Rob. You guys gotta be more careful next time. I always make sure that if it's a small stage, I'm using one guitar the whole show. If it's a large stage, I make sure the spare guitar is far, far away from all harm.

I remember years ago my v63 bass fell over and knocked the alignment of the horseshoes out. But that was all.
Rickenbackers are tougher than they look.
My Spira 8 string bass also took a tumble in a photoshoot and has a few little memorial marks in it..

Very stable, fold up nicely, the guitars are very secure and I can mount my Peterson Stroboflip on it rather than use a floor tuner!

What a bummer Rob, I know that story all too well. I hope the guitar is able to be fixed up.

Believe me Jake, they weren't being negligent, things sometimes happen beyond your control. A lot of people require different guitars to do different things throughout the set, such as a 6, 12, and acoustic, or whatnot. The more experience you get playing out, the more you will understand why stumbling drunks and bar room brawls afford little safety for that far, far away guitar.

I've had a few of those style stands. They're alright, but if the top gets out of alignment with the bottom they can still become unstable. Also, to hold basses you have to make the thing quite tall, which means higher center of gravity. I prefer the guitar sitting firmly on a surface while the neck is cradled up top.

I'm talking specifically about the Hurcules stand, Wes, not just that 'style' of stand. Even with only one guitar on it you'd have to give it an almighty shove to knock it over as the spread on the legs is very wide. Not sure what you mean by 'the top being out of alignment with the bottom' but I have seen others in that 'style' that I wouldn't hang my wet socks on!

Big Herc fan here...my only objection is their DeWalt power tool color scheme...

Too true...but I agree, the stands (full stands with clamps) are bullet proof, unless someone in your band is bent on destruction.

That's my favorite color scheme. When RIC makes it COY they'll call it Bumbleglo
