Melbourne had their "fun with fire" and it surely rivaled any in California or Florida for property damage. Comes down to either careless or malicious humans in most cases in populated areas.

Brian, I very relieved to know that you and Penny are safe. When you told me about this a few days ago, I was very concerned! Like Angelo Esposito always says: "Please, please, stay safe my dear friend!"
I agree with John A, this is usually the result of carelessness or malicious intent.
Last November on the weekend of MARF, the building that I work in was very close to being destroyed by wildfires that were started by some bonehead.

Unsubstantiated reports indicate some structures have been lost near Tyaughton Lake. Thanks for your good wishes everybody. All we can do is wait for rain that is predicted for Monday and hope that this does not get worse in the meantime.

I received this email this morning from our HS Internet provider. We had HS service installed on the weekend the fire started (go figure).

"Minto service interruption"

Due to the Tyaughton Lake wildfire, most of Minto Communications customers are now without service. The outage includes Gold Bridge, Tyaughton Lake, and southern Gun Lake. The only area unaffected is roughly the northern half of Gun Lake.

The MCS' main broadcast repeater is within the fire zone and has been offline since the evening of Sunday, May 31, 2009. We have been advised by BC Forest Service firefighters that the Minto Repeater has not been damaged. Telus and BC Hydro also have similar facilities nearby. They are intact as well.

Power to Gun Creek Road, Tyaughton Lake, and these three facilities has been cut off due to the power lines in the area being destroyed by the fire. It is unknown when BC Hydro will be able to restore electricity service. However, once the power has been returned, high- speed internet service and CBC television should come back automatically.

This does not look good. The fire has grown to 3500 hectares and it has breached an important fire guard.

I hate to to say this because it's due to it's such a terrible thing that's happening, but that's a cool looking photo.

Flames were 1000 ft in the air last night because they did a successful backburn near Tyaughton lake. The fire in that area is out. It is now raging towards Mud Lakes and Marshall Lake. The fire activity at Gun Creek is still a huge concern for us at Gun Lake because if it breaches the creek all residents will be forced to evacuate.

Highway 40 is closed because the fire is straddling the road all the way from 5 Mile Bluff to Marshall Creek. That's about 15 Kilometers. There is only one way out now from the area and that is over an extremely rough unkept logging road that winds through a high mountain pass. It is very difficult terrain to traverse and small cars are not likely to make it through.

Hopefully I am not boring many of you with these details.

Here's a webcam on the South Western side of Gun Lake that is focused towards Pearsons Ridge and The Shulaps. It refreshes every few seconds during daylight hours.
