Yep, the 4004 Cii TG is long gone. Go figure, a forumite bought it through the eBay. D'oh! Oh well.

What's better than a 4002? (besides TWO 4002's)
Well, the 4002 has pretty good sustain with the 21st fret, and all that extra wood between the neck and the pickup cavities. But there is a Rick bass that has a LOT of extra wood, for ridiculous sustain. I played a note on it last night that will probably sustain until September. Come on, it aint that difficult!

No, must be the FL (probably with flats). Other than that I only see guitars in his sig.

I had to put Hipshot Ultralites on my 2008 4003FL to get the sustain to come out in a few areas, but once I did... like he said, sustains forever. And it's definitely my favorite bass.

I've found that not all of my Rick tails have the same screws. Some have a slightly different thread type from others. Some of my 5 screw tails have the front three different from the back two. Most, if not all of my 7 screw tails have the back two slightly longer than the front five.

But I have 7 screw tails from 1987 (on a 4003) to 2000 (on a 4003S/5), and as with most things RIC...life is like a box of chocolates!

I was worried about going through to the back and also splitting the maple.

Okay, Mr. Dog. True to my promise, I have measured my screws! I took a small sampling of three, 7-screw tailed instruments. The regular tail screws on a 5-screw tail usually seem to be 3/4" long. My 1989 4003S/5 has these same 3/4" screws in the sixth and seventh position, but I don't like them as much for the job. Only two or three turns of the thread are grabbing maple. The other two sampled instruments (and most of my 7-screw tails from what I remember) had screws that were about 15/16" long. I think 15/16" is your best bet. If you have to go longer, obviously you'll want to hold it next to the bass/tail to make sure it isn't so long it will poke through the back of the bass, but I wouldn't worry much about that. You'd have to go a lot longer than 15/16" before the screw would poke through.
