Why pay extra for "road worn" when it's so easy to make 'em yourself?

I honestly don't get the Road Worn idea...which is odd, cuz I like things that look old and well worn in...never got into buying "distressed" bluejeans either...I'd rather wear my own holes and blemishes into them.

I eventually traded away my beautiful 36012CW because I was too scared to play it due to the potential for damage. Now you all can say "who cares, it is your guitar, and you like it, so don't worry about damage." But I couldn't just play it without fear that I would nick it up. Eventually, I realised that I was holding onto a piece of art and not a musical instrument, so I let it go. It still hurts, but even today if I never got rid of it I still wouldn't play it for fear of damaging it.

Now my Peavey Telecaster copy... that thing gets banged all around. I take pride in knowing how rock solid it is and how well it takes a licking as I keep on picking...

The butt of the guitar is good for that, and done right, you can keep on playing. I'm not trying to glorify these actions, but some of the bands I have been in have had some very rough, overenthusiastic audiences. I paid good money for my gear, and have an uncanny desire to leave the gig with the same amount of teeth I came with. There's a big difference between stormers and people just wanting to stage dive, and having a good, solid guitar helps to keep things from becoming really ugly and/or costly.

My Les Paul Custom had the corner edge of the headstock removed by such a stormers head It's a good size chunk gone, not enough ruin it or affect tuning or playability, but still good size. It makes me happy that it didn't break off the headstock, and I'm glad it wasn't my head that removed it. Everytime I look at it, I'm thankfull that my #1 guitar for so much of my playing life is still kicking. She's covered in battlescars, came with some when I bought her, added a bunch of my own. Never really bothered me at all, although the headstock deal is something I'm still on the fence with somewhat everytime I see it. I take good care of my stuff, wipe down after playing, clean, polish etc-and it kind of bugs me.

I would never play my 330 or 360/12 in a band situation like this, I'm far too paranoid to have worry about them getting smashed up or whatever. I have done some mellower stuff where I could take the 330 out and do a set with her, and all was well. I'd love to be in a situation where I could use both in a mellow environment, but it's just not in the cards at this time.

As far as my 4003? Sure hate to get smacked with that bad boy! I'd play that bass in any band, but would definitely get a flight case for it.

I probably wouldn't take my set-neck ricks to any situation that was remotely shady, but I'll bet my 430 could give better than she takes

Not trying to judge here....but that is one of the WORST reasons I've ever heard for selling a guitar. Methinks there is more to the story...?

To each his own:
I call my lead guitarist "The Carpenter" beacuse he treats his guitars just like a carpenter does a bag of hammers. At the end of a gig, he throws 'em in their cases and heads home. He changes strings only when they break and cleans his fingerboard only when there's too much muck on it to affect his fretting! Conversely, he makes fun of me because I spend way too much time lovingly wiping down my guitars between sets and giving them a thorough cleaning and polishing after every gig; yeah, I'm anal retentive. So...who's crazy? Probably both of us, sanity probably lies somewhere in between our two extremes. Regardless, both methods work; he plays smokin' lead night after night with his "beat up battle hardened warrior" and I play solid rhythm every night with my "dolled up prom queen!"

I don't care, personally, about nicks and dings. I like the relic look. My Rick srtill looks pretty pristine though.

I was once selling a white Firebird on Ebay. One guy emailed me with his phone number, so I called him. The guitar had one quarter inch ding on the front. He said, and I quote: "I could never buy a guitar with a dent, no matter how small, or even a scratch. When my cars gets a little parking lot dent, I have to sell them immediately."

That was a sick man in need of some meds quickly, to relieve him of his OCD problem.

I say, play the damn guitar and don't worry.
