I'm in the same boat, essentially. I think my low B just can't be heard clearly through my Acoustic combo. It's gotten to the point where I am noticing muddiness on my E string even. It's definitely not the bass as I've taken it to GC just to try out options and found it worked fine.

While there, I have pretty much had my mind set on a Markbass LMII. Although thinking about it, I really have no need for a full rig, despite already having gone and picked up a GK 15" cab and an empty Ric cab (that I may end up putting speakers in for the kidlet, not sure yet).

I may end up getting the Markbass 2x10 combo. The sound from it just made my jeans get wet.

Now my problem is that life keeps getting in the way and the womenfolk just start turning my wallet inside out.

After calculating how much I spend on smokes (yeah, I could buy a new Ric every year and essentially throw it away), I may end up quitting and going that route for my sound addiction.

Please do that. While RAS can be debilitating too, watching my cousin (who is an actor--his voice is his job!) hack and cough every few minutes on certain days, then light up yet another cig or five in the evening... it's painful.

I haven't touched a smoke for twenty five years. Just to give you an idea, I smoked a pack of 25 a day. The current price here is about $12; that equates to $109500.

That's a lot of Rics, not to mention the health benefits.

Yeah, my current poison costs me $8.50/pack. I don't smoke a full pack/day but average about 5/week. This means I spend roughly $2340 per year.

Literally wasted. Poof, gone. Up in smoke.

It's not that I can't afford it, it's that the money is such a waste when I could be buying stuff that will last.

Oddly enough, I quit years ago before moving to San Francisco but got to working 12-14 hour days there with little to no breaks. I chickened out because all the cool kids were going out on smoke breaks and I needed a break.

It's interesting that it's illegal to have cigarette commercials but in CA it's quite fine to have 100 anti-smoking commercials thrown at you every hour.

Until moving to SF, I never even thought of smoking again. Those damn commercials!!!



(I'm not really blaming the commercials, I just find it a bit ironic.)

Big Mesa Walkabout 12 fan. Perfect size for moving yet gives a big sound.

When I worked at both Walgreens and at a hospital, I noticed the smokers got way more breaks but were never really docked for it... it would cause one to consider taking up smoking in the midst of a stressful job. I should have brought in some candy cigs.

I quit the pack a day Camel habit when they reached $1.00 /pack, and over the years have recommended to any friend to do likewise.I'd probably be dead now if I'd still been sucking the duges.
Anyway, back to amps, I got a Behringer 300 watt combo to try the combo route, and haven't yet lost it nor burned it up.I have yet to see how it will survive summer heat
It's a LOUD little bugger but just a mite heavy at 60 lbs.But I don't have to haul in a head and cabinet(s), and it doesn't take up much space--a plus in some clubs where the band spot is tight quarters.Like the next 2 gigs where I'll have 5 sq. feet for my spot.

Fender Bassman 250/210. I love mine.

I have never played thru a Markbass, but the best amp I ever heard is the Acoustic Image. I use it for both my upright and the Rickenbackers. The AI is made more like a "stereophile" speaker than the standard bass cab and has (IMHO) vastly cleaner sound than most cabs. The famous "piano like" highs of the Rickenbacker come sailing right thru. It is also only 20 pounds for the whole combo and packs 400 Watts. If you want more juice, you can pair it with the AI passive bass cab (less than 20 pounds) and get 500 Watts total.

Well, I've worked as salary for the last decade. Breaks are what I make of them. I either have to take them or I get overstressed. I figure I'll just take coffee breaks instead, or surf the Internet more.

And candy cigs are great. Pure sugary güdness!!!

I use an Ampeg B100R and it is a fab combo, great tone and looks.

I have a Phil Jones Flightcase. It cost $649 plus tax from Sam Ash. It seems a little quiet for 150 amps at 8 ohms, but the clarity and frequency response is excellent, you can't beat the portability, and I think it should be fine for a coffee house, but if your buddy in the garage band likes to really crank up the volume, you may need something louder. I've used it at house parties and it was fine.

Carvin BR515: Great price, reasonable weight for it's power, plenty of user adjustability, and it'll move some serious air.
