In The past I have used a SWR Super Redhead as stage amp and di right out of it to the board. Awesome power my old one had 350 watts and tube 12xa7 preamp the newer ones are 400 watts. a bit pricey about $1600 new with 2 x10 and HF tweeter. you can add a 6 x 10 SWR ext cab and really kick it. IMHO.

After McCartney's Letterman appearance last night and playing with his band on the outdoor marque, I'll bet the Mesa 400+ orders go up as it was prominently displayed behind him.

You don't see many of those, where did you get two of them? Those were never common even when they were being made. If you like Ampeg punch, get a 70's head and cab, two cabs are even better, sounds like bass heaven and nothing will out punch them. You can walk on the bottom and they're clear as a bell, get all the highs you need. They are not real neutral amps though, they definitely sound like an Ampeg but people love them (other band members as long as you don't blow them off the stage) until it's time to move them that is. See now you got bobampeg going again, he was in hibernation for a while there.

He used to use Acoustic 360's during the mid 70's too, way after they had been D/C'ed I believe, he has a rep of being tight with the buck. The Mesa Boogie 400+ is essentially a big Fender anyway. Any amp with 6L6 tubes sounds Fenderish, they also had fixed bias of the 12 power tubes tubes I believe which made you have to keep buying the same brand of tubes in matched sets, very expensive.

Paul used a couple of Fender Bassman 100 + 4X12s when I saw Wings in the mid 70s.

Whatever you get I recommend TUBES ! I use a 1973 Ampeg B25B which is probably the loudest 55-60 watts ever. My favorite tone machine is my Traynor all tube YBA200 head. The guy that sold the Traynor to me had just bought a new all tube SVT classic 100 lb monster. He was shopping for a replacement Traynor about 1 month later saying the Ampeg was too heavy and did not sound as good as the Traynor. Tubes tubes tubes tubes............................................

Agreed on tubes. I avoided them for years with some pretty high end pre/power component systems with usually around 1000 watts. The sound was generally "good" but once I gave in to 300 watts of tubey goodness I haven't looked back. Truly the first time I have been 100% content with my amp tone. I don't even shop amp want ads anymore.....I never thought that day would come.
