Check out "The Move". Most of their 1st album has 12 string electrics on it. Their 2nd album-"Shazam-is completely covered in 12 strings, great chords and solos. If Roy Wood had played a Rick instead of a Fender, he'd be a popular reference here. Oh, and they also sang backups for Jimi Hendrix!

Lots of great Petty/Campbell stuff already mentioned. +1 on the Plimsouls, Mr. Echo, etc. I'll add a few...

The Church--One Day (Seance), Dropping Names, Tristesse (Heyday), Disenchanted
The Mighty Lemon Drops (can't recall specific songs at the moment--Vox teardeop 12 with vibro!)
Let's Active--Sweepstakes Winner (chorus), Forty Years (solo) [Mitch Easter is a great player and a Rick nut]
REM--So Central Rain, Pretty Persuasion, Little America, Driver 8, Green Grow the Rushes, Fall on Me, Cuyahoga, Swan Swan H [Lots of 12 on pre 1987 stuff--I'll bet Mr. Easter got Pete hooked]
Radiohead--Black Star (one guitar in the chorus, though pretty dirty, sounds thick like a Rick 12 to me--definitely a 12 in the bridge and outro)
The Brian Jonestown Massacre--Satellite, Servo (sounds like 12, might be effected), Going to Hell, Dawn, Monkey Puzzle, That Girl Suicide (12?)
The Quarter After--She Revolves, Changes Near,
The Sails--See Myself (these guys are a great retro 60s outfit--super jangle!)
The Smithereens--Listen to Me Girl, Crazy Mixed-Up Kid, Deep Black, Elaine

Didn't The Cars have at least one song with a Vox 12 on it or am I mis-remembering?

a Vox 12 on it or ?
Mighty Lemon Drops with Rick 12-"Happy Head" live-not much in the way of a catchy riff on this one though:

Mighty Lemon Drops with Vox Teardrop 12 in tobacco sunburst with whammy-not much of a 12 string riff on this one though either-curiously, the videos with the most promising 12 string riffs do not show either 12 string  :

Paul,

Yeah, it's been a while since I listened to my MLD CDs. Seems like most of the 12 is rhythm. This one has a short and simple riff:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4yndfvfN2P4&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4yndfvfN2P4&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Not a 12, but here's Mitch and Let's Active and he's playing a tulip!

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3Bp-Ho_4PBE&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3Bp-Ho_4PBE&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And here's a 12 on his 2007 solo tour playing an old Let's Active tune:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PmDnncc4s0M&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PmDnncc4s0M&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The Hollies, 1966. Tony Hicks did play a Ric 360/12 during this era, but this is probably his Vox Phantom.

I'm late to the party too, but there's some great stuff on this thread.

I love Mitch's Rickenbacker Tulip on the Every Dog/Let's Active video... especially how the video starts zoomed right in on the guitar. Can't think of any other video with a Tulip in it! (I've desperately been looking to buy a Tulip for years... if anyone has one in any condition (preferably cheaper/beat-up) please contact me!!)

Dig the ladies-as-mounted-deer-heads in the Animals video too, that is wacky. A classic 12-string riff there.

With the early REM videos & recordings, I think Pete Buck is actually usually playing a 6-string? It's hard to tell sometimes... I do know they recorded the same Rickenbacker guitar part 4 times on a lot of the early recordings, which is what gave them their distinctive super-jangly sound.

One thing about REM videos is they never seem to zoom in on Pete's guitar so you can see what he's playing... he's too modest. But here's a good one with a 12-string zoomed in --

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KN6IfClZjec&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KN6IfClZjec&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Kind of fun to watch these "how-to" videos... This one's not a Rick but it's even more impressive IMO, I thought this was a real demo video at first (and this was always my favorite REM guitar part overall) --

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/98yXij9-2zg&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/98yXij9-2zg&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And here's the actual band w/Rickenbacker ("I Believe" live), this song has the classic Pete arpeggios, and a great live vocal toward the end...

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_SzqAvn8r48&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_SzqAvn8r48&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

How about "Awaken" by Yes?
Steve played some real sideways Rickenbacker 12 string in the first half of the song including a torrential solo...
The live versions with the steinberger 12 sound clearer but not as half as exciting...

Eden.

Alright, just thought of a few more for this thread...

- The Smiths "This Charming Man" - A great 12-string riff, although it's not really the classic Rickenbacker jangle or chime at all, it's more of a "highlife" sound. Johnny Marr's finest moment. And the Peel Sessions/Hatful of Hollow version is a million times better than the single/eponymous album version, nice and bouncy.
- Flamin' Groovies "All I Wanted" - From the album after Shake Some Action, this track has some of the jangliest guitars ever recorded. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AD ... u_dp_trk12 I know Pete Buck mentioned them as an influence too. (Hm, I was fairly certain they played Rickenbackers but now I'm not positive...)
- The Soft Boys "Queen of Eyes" - Also super-jangly, although I'm not sure if this is a 12-string or 6-string. Robyn Hitchcock has always been a big Rickenbacker guy, he should be on this thread.

One more guitar lesson... this guy has way too many Rickenbackers:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/z_YSsbFgcDE&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/z_YSsbFgcDE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Live version. Great guitar, great lyrics, fun stage presence w/flowers flying, and the usual off-key vocals. 3 out of 4 ain't bad... ;)
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/F3hSDODDNs4&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/F3hSDODDNs4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I heard a local Omaha group called The Rumbles play Bus Stop using a RIC 360/12 for the intro. That was stellar.

It was about 1964 or 65, however. I know they still exist. I don't know if they do that song still.

Best,

Manta

Regarding the Tulip, I did see that a Tulip just showed up on ebay for $3000. (search on 1956 rickenbacker and you'll find it) It looks fantastic, and given the condition it's probably worth close to that, but I'm not willing to spend 3 G's on a guitar at this point.

Can't believe I forgot this one:

Don't know if it's a lick or not, but the driving, bright and jangly Rickenbacker 12-string from Pete Townshend on "I Can't Explain" will just send chills down your spine. It's one of my favorite 12-string songs.
