Yeah, for a long time my personal mantra was "no regrets." Just keep moving forward and all that. In my middle age it has become apparent that some regret is part of the nature of being human. Reflection builds wisdom. Admittedly, guitar-related regrets are pretty minor in the scheme of things, but its all part of the tapestry of life, ain't it?

Musician's Trading Post Santa Cruz, CA. 1980. I walked in when I already owned a late 70's model 4001. I saw the '73. Picked it up and played it for a while. I loved the feel of the neck compared to the later model. We talked about a trade but I wasn't working at the time so I had no cash. Got a job the net day..Got paid and by the time I got back...gone. The owner, (Steve) gave me the info on the buyer. Got in touch with him and he was quite impressed with mine. He wanted to think it over. In the interim, I lost that job...again no cash. About 3 months later I got a call from MTP and I was told it was back and it's $200 more than it was originally. I gladly gave him my Ric as a down payment. Two weeks later, it was mine. It got away...but I still caught it. The bittersweet demise has already been posted.

There was another one that did get away. Bazaar Guitar, Reno NV. 1984 I walked in and stared at the rack of basses and there was what I believed to be a 1965 4001. No triangles, the original horseshoe pickup cover...metal, I might add while the back pickup was quite loose and floppy. I picked it up and it played even better than the 73. It had a fireglo finish like mine...and if I remember correctly, kit had the R tailpiece. Aaahhh...to own two old 4001's MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Just recently..perhaps even last week..July 23, 2009, Guitar Center Concord, CA
A red fretless with black Binding 4003. Picked it up, played it. It had a nice feel with no frets to get hung up on but I'm still ecstatic with what I already have.

Oh, there is certainly room in life for regrets.......stuff like "oh, I shouldn't have robbed that liquor store," or "I regret having 12 illegitimate children" etc are perfectly reasonable (total fiction here, folks..), but missing on a guitar deal....? Pfff.....no huge deal, movin on!

Both 3 or 4 years ago:

330/12 in jetglo, close to new condition, for $750 from the local guitar store. I didn't buy it at the time, as I wanted a 6 string. A short time later the prices doubled, where they remain. If given the chance again, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Around the same time, same store, a 4001V63 in Mapleglo, for $1400. Gorgeous shape. I was going to buy it but they told me it was also for sale on ebay, and if the reserve had not been met, they'd sell it to me. They went online while I was there and, low and behold, the reserve was met. They couldn't sell it. I think it ended up selling for about $1700.
