Did you put something under the bobbin in place of the shoes to make up for the missing thickness?

Wood shims would be easy to make.

Or a few washers that stack up to the same thickness as the HS.

I am entering this thread a bit late but, is Dan sure that he doesn't have a horseshoe pickup that someone removed the shoes from? If a new plate or washers weren't installed, it would wobble.
Dan,
Post a picture if you can.

Anyone else removed their shoes with succes? Could you tell me the way you did it?
Thnx!
Edit:
I've tightened the screws from plate to pickup a bit more and it's already a bit more steady. Shoeless players, what kind of screws do you use?
And the end of the tape around the pickup is a bit loose. Is this bad?
I use the original screws and stacked washers the same thickness as the horseshoe.
The tape around the windings was loose on one of my HS equipped Ricks also. I just cut off the loose end of the tape. It was loose under where my thumb rests (on the top edge of the pickup) which I didn't think was a good idea. I only cut off a cm or two. The windings were still covered and the tape's end was no longer under where my thumb rests.
