An addendum: "Matt Black" (coded BLK) was the standard black for the Model 3000 and 3001 basses, and Jetglo was considered a non-standard color with a $25 surcharge for these basses.
In 2007(?) some guitars and basses left the factory in what has become known as "grayglo," an experimental version of Jetglo. I recall someone from the factory stating that they first overcoated the black color with clear flat, then overcoated that with the clear gloss. The clear flat reflects and refracts light causing the black to look, well, not so black.

I had issues yesterday posting images. Anyway. Things are better now.
I kinda wished this didn't have that tree in the way but I kinda like it with it for some odd reason. (Yeah, very non-committal of me, I know.)
That black Death Star (I know, it's not Vader but it might as well be) being a 5'er makes me all kinds of giddy thinking about it.

I used to have this:
but now I have this:
The 4003 is now owned by Brian Medway; the 4003S used to belong to Mark Henson (Henny). I'm sure Brian will chime in and show us a better picture of the 4003.

Here it is!

Gary, I think you can drop the "quasi" from your five-string Blackstar description, even though it may not have a certificate. Strangely, the Blackstar was the only one of the three "SPC" basses (the others are the Redneck and Tuxedo) to make an official RIC price list. It was described in the June 1989 list in "limited edition" as:
"4003s/SPC "Blackstar" bass, enhancement on 4003s with ebony black lacquered Maple fingerboard, pin dot fret markers reversed chrome and black hardware;
4 string $1169
5 string $1369
(punctuation and capitalization as printed)
That tells me that they intended to make 5-string Blackstars. I don't know whether they had made some ahead and didn't find buyers (hence the listing), or if it was simply a test balloon. Anyway, we know there were at least two made.

This is my favorite jetglo rick, a 4001 from Feb 1973, right before RIC started changing the way they made the 4001(deluxe).
