Yeah, I don't do the 'correct' left hand. I play it more like my fretted. I suppose that might be what end up hurting but I still say it's somewhat the jazz style neck as well. There's no way I could paly a p-bass though, those things are huge and even moreso uncomfortable. I have small hands, so my 4001's neck is perfect.
As for the output. It may be cheaper pickups. That makes sense. It may also be playing position. I play in between the neck pickup and the neck most of the time. For more output I'm forced to go back to the bridge pickup. The volume boost there is minor.
