I'll bet JH is laughing his butt off that this is being discussed here with such detail and interest. Since he owned the company when this bass was made, I'm sure he could just come out and say that he's never intentionally had a fingerboard painted blue before. I'm betting he didn't. Remember that the background AND the bass are blue and then consider the color limitations of the original flier's printing process.

Dane, definitely with you on the background and the bass being blue.
But what color limitations are in the original flier's printing process? I assume that it's using a standard 4 color print layout (CMYK)... which has 16 million color combinations.
I'm confused... likely due to inadequate information on my end.

Okay, I have it on GOOD authority that the fingerboard IS actually blue. Can we move on to more important stuff here?

Yeah, no offense Dane, but an all Midnight Blue bass to go along with the Blackstar, Redneck, and Tuxedo basses is an item of interest around here. No one had an iota of an idea one existed.

Well okay, those at the factory did....

Yep the did, and they don't seem to care to tell us why it was discriminated out of the SPCs...
Thanks for the input everyone!

Joaquin, it was probably an experiment and deemed not what they wanted to make or Midnight Blue numbers were so low it wouldn't be worth the effort. Guessing.....

You have to wonder how RIC marketed these SPC models back in the pre-internet days. While there are these publicity photos, this group does not appear in catalogs (that I know of), and only the Blackstar appeared on the price list once (as far as I can tell). Were special printed flyers sent out to dealers? Did RIC wait to start production until a sufficient number of orders were placed? Was the Midnight Blue example one of these offered? Perhaps RIC decided not to offer it, or maybe it was offered but not enough ordered to warrant production? Were any other colors tried like this?
OK, let's have fun with this. You have the Tuxedo, the Redneck, and the Blackstar. So how about "Midnight Express," or "Midnight Madness," or "Bruiser" (black and blue, get it?)?

Or, to keep with the single word names of the others, just "Midnight"...

I had thought about it... and what Paul is saying adds an awful lot of sense to it... Maybe it didn't get anyone's attention... or maybe it did, and there are a couple of folks around the world who have a "Bruiser" (I liked that one! lol) but who have no idea about this or the other forum...
I guess that until anyone from the factory says any other relevant thing about it we'll have to do with this conclusion.
Thanks everyone
Cheers

I was trying to come up with a name too, but didn't come up with anything clever. Bluestar? Maybe that's why they dropped the idea?

I think if you had emailed JH directly, you'd have gotten the answer, but posting the question on two different forums, bypassing direct contact, has a dismissive effect. Public statements like the above probably only add to that.
