Nice choice Marc!! MIJsixstringkatana is a cool seller, and VERY easy to deal with, long-distance.

I dig the blocks/binding Japanese models, and the quality on them is way more consistently high than on many of the actual CBS vintage models.

As far as Sonic Youth--glad your son can see past the Artist thing. The entire foundation of Sonic Youth's art and mission is expression, creativity, and being unique. They played old Jazzmasters because they were cheap, and very few people were playing them when they started in the early 80s. Modifying old guitars to suit their (often bizzare) musical vision was part of their creativity-----no "artist model" off the shelf will either make somebody sound like Sonic Youth, or gain street cred for being "like Sonic Youth," and I think nobody knows that more than Lee and Thurston themselves (laughing all the way to the bank though...!).

The color and the transparent finish are what my son liked about the artist model. No biggie in the end.

When we finally get the guitar, we've already discussed getting the pickups he wants, which will require a custom pickguard. Other than that, I can do the mods myself, which will be fun. It will give kudos to Sonic Youth but, will have a bit of Evan in it too which to me makes it great 8)

Geez, you'd think I'd get back to work to earn some dough for this project!

Very nice choice Marc--I had a hard time selling my CIJ offsets--I just couldn't rationalize keeping them with an AV JM and Jag. Also sad we can't order new from Japan anymore. You won't be disappointed with any MIJ/CIJ---but I would keep a close search on the 'bay for an AV--my current JM came in at about $925.

BTW--the shipping the Japanese sellers use is really good--they normally go with International Express Shipping, which translates to USPS Express Delivery when it hits the states. I ordered a CIJ Mustang right before the spigot got turned off in Fall of '07, and it was here in 3 days.

The guy's name is Dave, give him a shout and see if he's got a Classic JM coming in, and what he can do on price--he'll deal, definitely beat the internet warehouses, and will ship anywhere. I bought my new Classic '72 Thinline from him on Sat (that's my new guitar about halfway down the inventory list).

I just got my first Jazzmaster. All these years, and I never had one 'til now. Weird, but true. I like mine. It's a MIJ, candy apple red, with matching headstock. I'll probably take it on the gig this weekend. It doesn't suit everything I play, but works on certain tunes. It's very comfortable, but the bridge is a little strange. The strings were popping out of the saddles, so I filed bigger grooves and that seems to have worked. The guy I bought it from, a canadian dealer shipped it w/o strap buttons, so I had to buy some. He was supposed to reimburse me for them, but hasn't. I need to bust his balls about that a little.

I like the "2 guitars in one" deal with the JM. Once I figured out the two "wheels" on the pickguard, I realized you can have two settings for rhythm and lead.

Was just offered a genuine 66 all original for $2500. Seems pretty cheap , no? It's from a family friend. Can't justify spending that kind of loot on a guitar though.

Do it!!

Either buy it or put me next in line

Seriously that is a great deal and a good investment if it's not a
Refin.

Cool as the MIJ JM is, vintage is always cooler, and a better buy-- even at more money.

That sounds like a very good price, if as Collin says, it's all original. OTOH, you might not want to mess with it in terms of the mods it sounds like you guys have in mind.

That's a good but not great deal imo. This one sold on ebay for $2235

Sellers ask more but don't get it.

Well if the Vintage Guitar Price Guide has any meaning, in white(they have listing for common colors) a 66 Jazzmaster is listed, low price, ex condition at 5K. Supposedly they have an appraisal from a well respected local shop. We'll see. If it's legit, it's probably worth it as a flip, even in this market. Keep in mind it can get sensitive as this is a dear family friend for many years.

For my needs, I think we're going to buy the CIJ 66 with the block markers. Colin is right. That Ebay seller is a great guy and he offered to hold it for me with a deposit. My plan, if it works out, will be to get a custom pickguard made, a few changed parts, and the kid will have the guitar he wants. It will definitely be unique.I'll also be able to bring the guitar back to stock should we need to sell it one day.

That's the one i'm going for Marc, only in candy red. 8)

I never thought i'd go for any Fenders with the block inlays, but i love the look of these.
