NTE181, and there are three of them in the circuit.
Does it look like this? http://www.digchip.com/datasheets/downl ... ber=NTE181

Definitely not a small signal transistor! So I doubt it is that one.

No, those are definitely high power transistors.

Matthew, recheck the number on transistors in your circuit. I did find a schematic for the Yard Box:
yardboxschematic.jpg
The transistors are germanium PNP small signal types, and the 1N34 diode is also germanium.

Yes, they do look like that, but I just looked again, and, on one transistor, it looks like a 3, not an 8. Does NTE131 sound better?

If not, there are three other large components in the circuit (they don't look like most of the transistors I've seen, though) that read "241043 TRACON".

Do either of those numbers work?

Thanks,
Matthew

10 day order time though.

Thanks, I'll order some and find someone to fix it soon.

Are you sure that is the right package for the transistor? The NTE131 is about 1" x 5/8" in a oval shape like the PDF shows.

Do you have a camera or cell you can post a picture of the ones you need?

I read somewhere that these use PNP Germanium transistors, and the ones in the circuit are oval-shaped like the PDF, so I'm pretty sure these are the right ones. I'll give you some photos tomorrow.

Yes, photos of the inside of the box will definitely help.

If the transistors inside measure the about 1" by about 5/8", then the ones I linked to are the ones you need.

Here's the photo. I'm almost positive these are the right transistors.

Oh, yeah. NTE131, they're the ones you want.

Just to be sure, first, make sure the middle and left (in the pic) transistors are not touching cases.

They are touching, but I think it's the metal part on one and the wires on the other that are touching and both of their casings. Either way, they are very tightly fixed into position and I wasn't able to budge them - it must have always been that way.

Alright then, it was just a thought.
