This is true. When I got my '76 Azure 4001 I was over the moon, and thought I'd never sell it. Then I found my '72, which was far better. I later sold the '76 to buy a Pedulla MVP, and was quite happy with the exchange. My first CS was a dream come true, but eventually things about it started to annoy me, so that went too. The Pedulla eventually went to satisfy GAS; a mistake at the time, but I moved on. Selling my 4000 and my 2nd CS was a wrench both times, but now I don't really miss either. There are others too. The toughest sale I ever had to make was my custom-built Alembic; that I do miss but I know my back thanks me for it, which is the most important thing. These days I think I could even let my '72 go for the right price, particularly as I'm not playing that much anymore. There's always another nice bass out there. As my chronic back/neck problems worsen, it's usually a lighter one too.

My 4005 WAL is probably my rarest Rickenbacker and it is allowed to go for another 4005 in the darkest AZG posible.

There is a figure in my head that if someone offers it I would part with my most cherished possessions. When I offered my LK up some time ago nobody was willing to hit that mark. If I needed the cash for something important (family, puppies, house/acreage) then I'd be more flexible on what I'd be willing to accept. At the time I wasn't playing much and I always valued the LK more as a player than a collectors piece so since it wasn't getting used I tested the waters. I'm still not playing constantly but every time I do I'm glad that I still have the LK. In an odd way one of the reasons I'm glad it didn't sell is that at least I know it's getting used......it would be a shame for such a great player to waste away in a case.

I've got a 2005 Laredo I'd be willing to let go. I was thinking about doing what I'm doing for my 4003 project with it (Hipshot bridge, Audere 4-band preamp, toaster neck pickup, custom bridge pickup) so I could compare the sound. Right now I'm getting a wider bridge and Audere 4-band put in a 1998 4004L (maple fretboard) that is a Jeff Rath 4-2-5 conversion. It sound's pretty good with the humbuckers, but I was thinking about trying the same toaster neck/custom bridge combo and compare the recordings, as well as compare against the 2005 Laredo with the bubinga fretboard. As far as Rics, there might be collectors items, but practically speaking, your perfect 4 or 5-string right, with the exact woods, pickup, bridge, etc would be the best to play, and I'd imagine it could be done for under $2000, as my 4003 project will come in under that, and it will kill brand new Rics that are selling for $3500. I'm sure my 5-string will too, although with shipping, I paid over $2000 for it originally, so it will come in around $2500 because I doubt I'll get much money for the old bridge or electronics

Rarest? I guess that would be my 4004Cii BBR or my DCM and I probably would sell the 4004 if the price is right. I just haven't gotten into it yet. It's made well and I played it yesterday for the first time in a couple of months and I like the sound more than I did before, but the neck is a bit wide. The DCM may go as soon as the market picks up since I bought it at a reasonable price at the time (right before the "DCM crash" of 07 It's a good thing I don't play the stock market!!) Selling my 79 4001 is another matter entirely, though, and would probably take significant financial crisis to put it on the market.

Come to think of it, for a guy who only plays as a hobby and in the church band, I have a couple of rare-ish basses.

With reagrd to the subject, I am not a real bass player, yet I have a number of basses, so I don't have perhaps as strong an affection for the basses as a true bass player would have. That said, the rarest would have to be my 1967 RM3261 FG, and the second rarest would be my 1977 4000 FL BG. I guess I'd part with the RM3261 before the 4000 FL ...

...seeing as you are not a real bass player and I am, I'll take the RM3261 off your hands so you will feel better that a real bass player is playing and loving it.

That photo is of one in the RIC factory, so it exists, but the forum does not know who owns it.

i've often considered moving on my '63 Burns Vista-Sonic bass, probably the only "rare" bass that i have that i wouldn't feel a pit in my stomach if i sold it.

Fender Mustang Fretless...looks to be a factory fretless (dot markers on the maple neck) with a r/wood or perhaps ebony f/board. plays like a POS, intonation is a word you'll find in a dictionary, not on this bass! but - 'twas my first bass guitar ever, so will never be sold (well, unless i need a new hip or something! )

'89 Rickenbacker 4008 Redneck. picked this up for a song many years ago, but she's been shelved after i found out how rare (and potentially valuable) it is. still, i don't think i'd ever sell it outright - like others, i'd rather use it in a trade for something that moves me a little more...4005, 4002, 1999RM, '68 CB 4001, maybe a CS...

who can do honest/accurate appraisals via photographs/video?
