The catalog pic I posted is from 1985, which is about when I bought mine (I was living in Japan at the time - high school in Tokyo was a blast!). Not sure about the Greco. But my guess is that the Japanese companies may not have made a dedicated 4001S copy, but definitely made Paul McCartney bass copies. Whether they were made as far back as the '70s, I'm not sure. So you're both right!

Well yes and no...some of them where modified 4000's

In 78' (or 79?) I special ordered a 4001-s from a store in Ottawa Canada. I had to order it from their catalogue as they only had the binding/triangle 4001 in stock WHEN they did have them.
They description in the catalogue and from other literature was the they where the same specs as the 4001 except mono and no binding and dot fret inlays.

I was around 18 at the time and dropping that sort of cash on a rick wasn't easy for me. I can't remember the deleivery time on the bass but it was fairly fast.

I was SO $#$%^&^%%$#@!!! ****** when I opened my the case to my new bass and flipped it over and saw a set neck! Thanks Rick for pulling a 'switcheroo'.

There was no indication anywhere that would leave anyone to believe that they changed the model. I read specs from Rick, I read reviews in magazines all stated the 4001-s had a neck through body.

Talk about a disapointment, paying for one thing and getting another. Don't get me wrong it was a great bass and it played like a dream.The band I was in at the time was playing pretty much every weekend and I couldn't afford the down time to send it back, I was a starving musician that just blew his wad on a Rick and that was my only bass after selling my Univox Stereo Bass (which had neck through Body/Stereo and was an amazing copy)

Shame on you Rick for that!

Eventually I traded it in after sevral years for an 1983 Ibanez Musician Fretless and later purchased a 'true' 4001-s (neck through body) and a 4001 v63

I loved you Rick... but your really really hurt me (sniff)... I was just a kid for crying out loud!

droog61...i have the price list for jan. 1st '79 and there is no listing in it for the 4001-s. it is however, listed in the june 1st '81 as i had ordered one from ric thru steves music store in toronto. in the undated cat. that had the '81 price list, there is no mention of a set neck for either the 4000 or 4001-s. they do say the 4001 neck runs the full length of the guitar but do not mention that spec for the 4003 next to it. in the undated cat. that had the '79 price list no mention of set neck for 4000 but mention full length neck thru for the 4001. these lists came inside the cats in a ric manila. i too was surprized on the set neck, but it and a 4000 i had played great. the 4000 played even better ! i turned the 4000 into a 4001-s by adding a new pickguard and neck pickup. my 4001-s was jetglo/white and the 4000 was light autumnglo/white.

I got mine from Lauzon Music on wellington street in Ottawa ordered off a salesperson named Larry Gentle, It was white with black pick guard, may have been 78 that I purchased.
He ordered it for me from a catalogue the store had. I'll try to post a pic if I can link to face book.
