No I haven't, Kira. I've never played a real 12-string bass. Is the Waterstone 12 the kind that Tom Peterson plays?

That's the one currently used by Tom. I built him a LS version last year...

I've got two Waterstone 12ers and a Hamer. Thick necks, one and all, but the Hamer is about 3/32" less than the Waterstones.

I agree Paul, I doubt the 4003 necks could take it, even though this one of mine has a substantial neck for a Rick. It would make a good 8 string candidate. Of my 5, it is THE most stable neck. The others move with the seasons, this one does not.

Mark that was really impressive - really 'kicks hiney' - too bad the neck wouldn't support it that would be one hell of a sound!!! and the think about alt tunings..... maybe the tune would be a submission to RRF CD3???

Thanks, guys. It was fun to do, Although, I admit that as experiments go, I played this one rather conservatively. I stuck strictly with octaves since I was trying to emulate a 12-string, but the potential to go "outside the bass" is much greater. Since the three-bass method allows complete interval independence, I could have done all kinds of three-part harmonies, administered chords here & there, etc. Another project for another day, perhaps.

I won't be submitting this one for RRF CD3. It's over 8 minutes long, and a bit dark overall for something I'd care to offer. I'll have to whip up something new.

12 string basses are fun to play. They do take a bit of getting used to. They give the player a pretty good left hand work-out. If you have one that you haven't played for a while, you sort of have to get used to it again.

I played one for a few years. When I went back to a "regular" bass, my left hand was bending bass strings like guitar strings!
Had to learn an lighter touch!
But the sound.....OMG...shakes the foundation of any place you are playing....it's awesome.

I play 12 strings about 85% of the time, I find that once you get use to the flat finger method of playing, they feel quite comfortable under the fingers. Although they have more strings a well setup 12ver can be a fairly slick and forgiving to play.
* note: It really has to be well setup, or you will give up quickly.....

The Waterstone 12vers are probably the best option for us folks with Rickenbacker trained ears.....

And Jdog, I'd love to have one of your old S/8s as well..
