I am really late to this party, but as a Beach Boy's fan am glad I found it. Paul, did you make those charts yourself? Even my wife would appreacite the last couple!
As for whether "Surfer Girl" is the quintessential Beach Boy's song, I remember a Brian Wilson solo concert from 2002/2003 (toured with Paul Simon) and he sat behind a keyboard looking sad and messed up all night. He got up to play only ONE song on Bass... Surfer Girl... and it was at this point in the concert the two people in front of me decided they wanted to get up and leave. But they were blocked in by others sitting their row, so they spent several minutes fighting amongst themselves before finally making it out. I was crushed, because this concert didn't have the typical video screens in the background and I could see that they didn't care about BW at all. I nearly shoved the guy down myself to see.
