Add in a headstock pitch of 17-18 degrees (can't remember the exact value) and it's a recipe for disaster. Another one of those design flaws that will most likely never be fixed.

Les Paul and SG are both 17 degrees. Snap. See ya. The price of "sustain", pursued at any expense.

This is something that was fixed back around 1970 with the valoute (sp?). The Gibson purists didn't like it so Gibson yeilded to the presure and removed it. I have owned a number of Gibsons without a valoute and never had a neck snap.

Volute...spells like it sounds.
The volute strengthens that thin area. The neck joint is at fault here, and porous mahogany coupled with a vertical grain pattern at that point means that a drop that will make other guitars--Ricks and Fenders among them--go "twaannnngggg!!!" will make a Gibby go, CRA-A-ACK...

When Gibson develops the guitar that can stop itself from falling over, then they'll have a true robot guitar!

hmmmmm. I have to say, that would be VERY cool, Jdog.
I tend to think there is nothing that "can't be done," though it would be tons of work.
Heck, I even thought of taking one of these old MCI Guitorgan PCB/guts/fretboard and retrofitting them into a Rickenbacker, to make a "Rickenorgan." That's even more complicated that the Robot Ric, but it's just my weird dream, I guess.
