I was hoping that Diane would do this series. When she heard what I had posted, her curiosity got the best of her as she really likes DCFC very much. Maybe she will do it...well see!

I listen to new music to help not become an old fart and if I ever do get back into teaching bass, I don't want to be viewed as such by a youngster.

My biggest problem with many of the the newer rock artists is they DON'T bring the rock. I listen to some of these NEW-Rock stations and for half the songs they play, I think to myself...where is the rock? :?

I work with a lot of young people and they are usually surprised to hear that I'm familiar with some of the newer music.

Yes but remember cjj, as far as originality is concerned, most often new artists and new groups are heavily influenced by older groups. Listen and tell me what you think -- could this group have been an inspiration for Death Cab for Cutie? I think definitely.

I completely agree that new artists are heavily influenced by older groups. For that matter, so were older groups, we are, after all, influenced in some way by everything we experience.

My comments were mainly poking some fun at people who seem to get stuck in one small time period of music. I know many people who listen to nothing other than what they listened to while in High School or College. I've never been able to understand that. Sure, there's a lot of stuff I like from that era, but there's a lot of new stuff that's worth a listen as well. And some of it is, in my opinion, a lot better than what was considered to be the epitome of rock "back in the day"...

I know exactly what you're talking about and I agree with you completely. I have a friend who collects music and DVD concerts and he is a great expert in that area, but he simply will not listen to any new material (after the mid sixties!!) claiming that the best music has already been written (??!!) . . . He forgets that not only music changes but also tastes in music. But he doesn't like new music a priori, intentionally shutting himself up to new music, on the grounds that it is not any good, which is real narrow-mindedness.
