Mr. Harrison's guitar was the victim of photography there. Despite the merits of Kodachrome pictures holding their color, reds are still hard to photograph, and it came out looking "clownglo."

Did someone say clownglo?

2001. Not exactly a vintage year for the old fireglo finish.

That makes my 330 look rather grand Rob. :D

I'd say the picture of the back of that guitar is a fine example of clownglo.

Hard to imagine RIC letting that one out the door

Your 330 is grand Brian.

The way this one has been photographed doesn't do it any favours, but you have to admit that for a short while at the turn of the century, they were struggling with this finish on some guitars.
Could that be why the first 2 colours of the year in 2000 (Sea Green) and 2001 (Desert Gold) were solid colours?
Still, I'd sooner have a 'clownglo' Ric than a 'Relic' Fender any day!

I always took it ot mean super PINK in the middle. Unfortunately these ones do not seem to be mellowing into amber FG that we all love. IMHO (which along with 50 cents will get yo a cup of coffe in any diner in america)

I've seen many new FGs that are hot pink in the middle. I think FG still has plenty of pink.

The "Clownglo" phenomenon; another reason why I like bold, solid colors.

This one shows the pink in several of the shots. I've seen some new ones in person where the pinky center was boldly prominent. Bottom line is FireGlo has a pink to it.

Nah i dont see it and looking at the 09 /10 models i see some of the best FGs to come out of RIC.The pictures in the link above are terrible inside shots that dont give any insight or scope to the guitars natural colour.Flash photography indoors on the burst show the above guitar in the link to be inconsistent in colour and shade.Photo number 5 and 7 for example look completely different thus not giving a true representation of the new FGs.Regarding seeing new models with the Hot pink I cant see it.This is something that looks to me of being `Pink` in the lightest part of the burst which probably is due to the flash bleaching out the colour.Im not saying there is no pink in the middle of some Rickenbackers what i am saying i cant really see it in the new 09/10 models http://www.rickresource.com/register/us ... 4569/2.jpg but then again its a poor inside shot of a burst that gives a false representation of what the guitar actually looks like. Generally looking through the register of 09/10 models i dont see it.Bringing me back to the start of the thread the photo is accentuating the colours badly probably due to Digital cameras lack of subtlety. This is probably a better representation of a new FG http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2009-Rickenback ... 151wt_1040

It's changed even during the '07-'10 period. The first "reformulated" FGs I saw in stores were a bit odd looking with very dark edges and pink centers, and I think Steve might be thinking of those. Some might have noticed that AFG guitars changed dramatically in appearance over the run, and I think this is because of the overall FG transition.

Since then (at least in pictures I've seen online), the FG has really been perfected - it no longer looks so pink and has lighter, redder edges.

IMO.

Here's what I'm talking about.

2007: Dark edging and pinkish center hue (more noticable in person).

2010: Very red, ambered center, delicious.
