I have never heard of that either, nor have we seen any examples of one here at the forum. I agree, a picture of the coil and poles would help.

I wonder if it was a special order that got the horseshoe pickup on it. A RIHS shows no magnetic properties attracting steel; not on the two I have. Only magnetic shoes. If you want to add more magnetism to these shoes, you can remove them and put a strong, correct height magnet(s) in the gap and recharge them. Also putting them on the magnet from a very large woofer does it too.

And welcome aboard - beautiful FG!

Sweet bass, Steve! :D

If you want to resize your pictures without cropping, I suggest getting the freeware software FastStone Photo Resizer, available at CNET's download site. I use it to batch resize pictures I take at the NAMM show and our local RickResource Forum get-togethers.

Education needed! What's the purpose of the chrome piece over the bottom pickup? :?:

Jack, those are what we call horseshoes because of the shape. They are magnetized and the coil is inside the magnetic field.

Does that have some significance as far as improving the sound in some way?

People will ascribe all sorts of magic to the horseshoe pickup, but mostly, it has significance in that it was an early way of providing the magnetic field necessary to produce the signal from the pickup...

The magnetic field the shoes create senses string vibrations in all 3 dimensions, whereas the under coil magnet bars and the screw poles sense in 2 dimensions. Or that's how its been explained. I hear a more rounded/fuller sound to the plucked string with magnetic shoes. The reissue horseshoe pickups (V63, CS, C64, C64S basses) are not magnetic - the magnets are the alnico rod magnets through the coil.
