I heard he needed a bass with a thumb rest.

He has the first model. john Hall made it as a gift for him. The first production model was a right handed model and I think it is still at Rickenbacker.

I've grown to like the spacing on my 4003S/5 and I play it fingerstyle 99% of the time.

You learn to adjust how you pluck or you just don't play it well at all.

If Jeff Beck, John Mayer, Lindsey Buckingham, just to name a few can play guitar as well as they do without a pick, a bassist can adapt to playing the S/5 fingerstyle if he/she tries.

There is one in Australia somewhere. And it has one of the horseshoe re-issue style bobbins (with 5 alnico slugs though)
