It is nice not to have to be at the mercy of a delicate nut for first position string action. Besides, I shouldn't think it would even an issue with bassists (funny, my Gretsch '63 6070 bass doesn't have a zero fret!)
Well, they didn't... at some point, Paul McCartney had his 4001 modified with a zero-fret (to be more like his Hofners?), and Rickenbacker followed suit when they produced the 4001C64S.

As for the string-bending, I can see that -- a low-cut nut makes it harder to bend "under" adjacent strings. Come to think of it, I wonder how much of the "Ricks aren't good for lead" stigma comes from the traditional setup -- low action, low nut, and no neck relief. Hmmm...

there's a 4005/8 in smiths book with a zero fret. don't know if that is original to the bass.

That 4005/8 also happens to be a medium scale bass.

Those would most likely be geetar players. I don't think it would be an issue for 99.9% of bass players.

And I will chime in with: Don't do it! If you don't like the zero fret (& I'm not sure why), sell the bass -- unmolested.

Are you saying that you are selling it without a bridge pickup or that you want to buy a new hi-gain to keep the bass for yourself or to sell complete?

Aren't most of the RI HS p/ups hi gain coils with non-magnetic/for looks only "shoes"?

The RI HS PUs have a totally different design, the shoes notwithstanding, compared to hi-gains. Instead of a rubber bar magnet and polepieces as the hi-gains have, the RI HS PUs have AlNiCo magnet slugs in place of the polepieces.

Actually a current higain bridge pickup will sound almost the same as the reissue horseshoe pickup did. If you decide to go with the higain, PM me.
