I was wondering there for a while as to what my son would choose for music. I myself grow attached to rock (now classic rock). For a bit he went to rap but that was short lived (I don't like rap so I was happy). Then he started showing interest in rock, current and classic. Then I got him his first guitar. A cheapo but it got him started. He now has 3 guitars (one being a burgundy Strat). He also thumped around a little on a hollow body bass i got sevral years ago thinking I wanted to stay with a bass of some form. Then he picked up piano, took lessons and shortly started to teach himself. Like the guitar he taught himself with minmal lessons. It brought me back to my childhood. I learned piano first, then went to bass. i self taught playing the bass by ear and never learned the sheet music I wished I did. But I didn't have the patience. I wanted to play, not learn about theory. So after a couple lessons on the bass, I noticed I was learning more at home than at lessons and dropped them.
But getting back to your point. Jamming with the youngin's is going to be so much fun. I can put a little experience to their new energetic style. Who knows what will come of it but spending time with him in a jam or two, I'm going to appreciate that to no end. And I hope he does too. It's like a dream. Heck he's in there right now playing some riffs and don't even know what's gettin ready to happen (I haven't told him yet).
And yes, pics will be coming.

Tom that's great .... You all have fun... My oldest did guitar lessons. His teacher was slick. Taught him to play stuff he wanted to play and slipping in music theory as the mastering of a tune took place. Diabolical but good plan. So he knows how to get the 7th of a chord, what is augmented...etc etc etc etc. I must be lucky all my kids love the classic rock as well as the new stuff. Some of which I really dig. I want to try and get the older one (guitar) and the younger one (drums) together to do something like Behind Blue Eyes. Some what easy to get to sounds of and fun! Good luck with your endeavor.

Tom, You ARE lucky to have the children you do and the music they like to hear. I like some of the newer rock too. Since I just had one child, I might have to get the wife to learn to play drums (yea right LOL). Good luck to you too Tom on your endeavor.

Don't discard that idea so quickly. My wife learned how to play drums and was the drummer in a cover band and a blues band that I was in. We didn't play out a lot but having a female drummer always drew a little extra attention. Fortunately, I played guitar and sang in those bands so I was always between her and any "ardent" fans.

I sympathise with your story - I too once sold a treasured Ric, only to return to the fold within 6 months!

I think it's only natural to look around.....but I've since learned to keep hold of the Rics, as it's the other basses that you tend to fall in and out of love with!

Greetings and welcome! Great story,I can sympathize with,as I have owned and sold a few special Rick basses and guitars over the years. I keep coming back to them,tho,and I have 2 currently that are not going anywhere anytime soon. Congrats on the imminent retirement-it is a perk to be able to retire while you're still relatively young! (I'm 56,myself and would love to stop working,but it ain't gonna happen...

I guess i should clarify. I'm just retiring from the military, not from working though (too young for that ) so working at the FAA as an Electronic Tech will keep me going for another 15 years. This job will allow me to spend money on a new amp and other Rick related things .
I'll post pics next week when I get her. I need to scan my older pics to show and compare as well.

Retirement? In the UK, the retirement age is being raised to 66 for men in the next decade, then 67.

There is serious talk that 70 is not to be out of the question in coming years!
