As far as I know, RIC has not revealed the meaning of "C." I don't know what the "S" refers to in the case of the C64, but it isn't the dotted fretboard; both the C64 and C64S have it.

The C64 starts with the reverse headstock. Otherwise, it's what you might see if RIC were to simply reissue a '64 4001S. That includes concessions to technology such as the modern truss rod system and modern horseshoe pickup.

The C64S incorporates other McCartney-specific features. In addition to the reverse headstock, it has shaved body horns, zero fret, different pickup surround, satin finish body and neck.

I forget what the "S" in 4001S stands for, but it indicates the non-deluxe version of the 4001: no triangle inlays, no binding, no stereo output. In lieu of binding, the body is more contoured. But that's a different "S."

As far as I know the "S" in C64 means sanded. That is my belief.

I think it stands for "SIMER". And if it doesn't, it should!

How did the installation work out for you? Was any routing or serious modification needed?

Yep- is is supposed to look like how it looked after McCartney sanded his psychedelic paint job off it. Apparently, it needed a very aggressive sanding job and Paul inadvertently sanded the inward facing tips right off the body horns. If you compare pics of both bodies next to each other, it is clearly evident.

Where did you get the push/pull switch?

I don't think that is quite right. When Paul stripped the psychedelic paint job off the horns were intact and the bass appears to have a finish. Check out this picture.

I believe Paul purposely sanded the horns off and rounded them. So it is evident that the bass went through at least 2 refinishes after the psychedelic paintjob.

Sure looks that way.

To what end, do you think?

And I am grateful for this, as I always learn from and enjoy these discussion. Any talk about the 4001C64 model is always a blast for me!

I like Paul's bass in it's form above (closest photo to this post). Finish stripped off, horns rounded, hi-gain bridge pickup, small bridge pup surround, dirty, used, modded...beautiful!

I've even considered sanding off the satin finish on my C64S, rounding out the body edges a bit more, and putting in a 70's hi-gain!
