Bit late on the thread, but on several occasions I've found a set of rotosounds can be a very effective way of separating the nut from the neck when tightening up from new - superglue solved it.

Right, John, but this is a '97. The way yours are is true of instruments older than circa 1984, but around then they began installing the nut after the varnish was applied.
