So, I came here looking for information on properly setting up a Ric bass. Imagine my surprise to read about my birthday experience!

Yeah, it was a bittersweet night and a complete surprise from my amazing wife. I've actually been posting over at the Rickenbacker "just basses" forum about the bass as well because I was actually considering exchanging the bass for a cheaper model. She knows what kind of McCartney freak (does anybody else suffer from this??)I am, and so she purchased the 4001c64s model. I couldn't believe how expensive it was. Keep in mind, while I'm a competent guitarist and okay singer, I'm a new bass player. So to have such an amazing instrument, while totally cool, is also kind of making me a bit guilty. As someone over at that other forum said "you could've taken your wife on a good vacation for that kind of money"- So true.

I'm going to hang onto it with her complete blessing and I cannot wait to play it live. It's being "set up" at the moment as the action was a bit high for me and I didn't trust myself to do it. The original poster, let's call him "Larry" ;) , was right, I do have a new McCartney tribute band (no wigs!) and also a Styx tribute band. I play bass in the Styx one and have offered the guy in the McCartney band the chance to play the bass- He's scared to death that he'll be the guy to put the first "ding" in it, so he's declining until I actually do that myself. Haha. Anyway, I have these visions of "real" bass players coming to see the shows and seeing that bass on me and going "What's that guy doing with this bass???" I will gladly "suffer" through this. :)

By the way, just to say this- I've met so many musician's wives that have the whole "when are you going to give up this silly music stuff?". My wife is SO not that way. In fact, she bought me a Strat the first year we were together and a Ric 360/12 for my 43rd bday. She truly supports my musical activities. An amazing girl!

Thanks "Larry", glad you had a good time!

I couldn't seem to post the photo inline to this post, so here's a link.

Oh, yeah, she's a keeper for sure. Having a wife that supports your music jones and also encourages it is pretty special. I get the bass back today from having it set up, so I'm really looking forward to playing it.

And congratulations on the 4001C64S! That's a special bass - play the heck out of it.

Bryan cool story and welcome. Our lives are very similiar in that I was fortunate to acquire one of these last year and my wife is also very supportive of my muiscal "career" and sends me off to every rehearsal and gig with these four words. "Have fun...love you" While she will never understand my need to own RIC's that now number in the double digits, she never has stood in my way either. We are indeed.. lucky guys.
