rictified wrote:All you have to do is look at videos of kids on YouTube, Rickenbacker basses are all over the place and 90% of the Rickenbacker bass videos are all kids or then again maybe I'm just a geezer now (at 57) I bought my first Rick bass when I was 24. I do definitely think they are very popular amongst young players though.
I wonder how many of these kids saw it on the guitar shop wall and thought, "Wow, check out this new bass nobody else has ever heard of! And it's got this cool, sorta growly tone! I'm totally gonna buy this one..."

Laugh all you want, I didn't know Rickenbacker (the brand nor the instrument) existed until age 20. And I'd been a gigging bassist for several years at that point.

It was 1978, I was 17 and bought a new MG 4001. I'd wanted one ever since I opened up the inside of the Magical Mystery Tour album. Although, I still regret that due to very limited funds at that age, I had to trade a nicely reliced pre-CBS Jazz!

Ehhhh, you lead a sheltered life.

For me it was when Paul got one, then Mike Rutherford was on Ed Sullivan, then I saw a local bassist with one, and later I heard Yes and saw pics of Chris and his great sounding bass. I was definitely sold, but didn't get one until February 2005. Life intervened.

I don't know how sales figures have changed but I remember when I was the only player with a Rick among the dozens of rockers in my (NYC metro-area) town in the 70's.

I am STILL the only player with a Rick in the midst of all the rockers around here who have everything else!

I was in college, late '70s, playing a Guild bass in a band. Our keyboard player said she'd seen an ad for someone selling a Rick bass. I'd seen 'em on album pics, but never in person. We went and looked at it, a '74 4001 Mapleglo. Needless to say, after playing that one, well, it went home with me! I think it cost me $450, which was a lot for a poor college student in those days.

Man, I sure wish I still had that one. :( I'm still looking for it, and if I find it, I'll buy it back...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Scotty,

Growing up with bass heroes like Squire and Geddy Lee, was there another bass to have?

Seems like today, there's not as many musicians to look up to...or maybe I'm just missing it
