"but 1971 was the last year that the 4001 did not have a skunk stripe, which was a feature of the earlier basses."
So, the stripe was on, then off, then on, then off again?

The shedua strip was a feature of the standard production 4001 from '72 until the end of the run about '84.johnnysain wrote:"but 1971 was the last year that the 4001 did not have a skunk stripe, which was a feature of the earlier basses."

JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!

It came in somewhere around May '72 I think. My Feb '72 doesn't have the stripe so technically they're not completely correct.johnnysain wrote:"but 1971 was the last year that the 4001 did not have a skunk stripe, which was a feature of the earlier basses."

Kevin, there's no doubt that this is a beauty and in great condition; I'd love it. However I have to agree though that although not in anything like the same condition cosmetically (on the back at least!), because of its far greater rarity I would expect the 21 fretter to be worth in a similar ballpark to this, although I could be wrong. To have acquired a 4002 as well for that price; well, that's pretty good going.jai_the_bass wrote:I'm lucky enough to have been able to pick up 2 beauties this year; the 4002 is hopefully going to be on it's way to me soon & the 1971 21 Fret 4001 that used to belong to Kevin (Teeder) & came to me via Shaun .Ric N. If that beautiful 4002 on ebay just sold for $3,200.00 (if memory serves me correct - it's in a recent post so it'll be easy to find), what chance does this 1971 4001 have of selling for the price currently advertised?![]()
Seems highly unlikely.
Don't get me wrong. I'd love to have it. Just not at what the dealer is asking.
I accept that cosmetically the 21 fret is nowhere near the condition of this bass that's up at $6k HOWEVER I would have to pay basically the combined costs of both my recent purchases for this and, given the rarity of the 21 fret & both rarity & condition of the 4002, I'd have to say that a) this is overpriced and b) I know which I'd rather have.
