John what you overheard was incorrect. The strings were indeed a "12" string set. Not a set with .12's for the high E. The E strings were .10s. Sorry if you were confused.

jingle_jangle wrote:Yikes!!! Non-Rick tech hears, "TI 12s" and instead of putting a .010 12-string set of TIs on it, puts a set of TI .012s on it.

Explains a lot. Also underscores the whole warranty thing. Don't mess with the specs unless you know what you're doing. This tech apparently didn't know what he was doing.

He was given a set of TI's a 12 string set, not a set with 12's. The shop doesn't carry TI's, they were specially ordered online and I had to wait for them to arrive. Why the hell would I put .12s on a Ric 12, I'm not the Incredible Hulk. Don't make assumptions that you cannot confirm and he is not a "Non-Rick" tech he's worked on plenty.

The guitar was just at Rickenbacker. They said the rod is fine and the strings are to blame.

Thanks for the clarification, Todd. Here's how they are marketed:

"Correctly gauged to replace Rickenbacker set 95404 with minimal set up changes. No Packaging. These sets are put together exclusivley by (name of the store)

10/10 13/13/ 20/10 25/13/ 34/20 44/25

Man, I guess I was really going out on a limb here.

Ok, did the guitar come back to you yet, and was the diagnosis that your spinning truss rod was due to string tension? I'm wondering where you are at in all of this, and if you are able to play your new guitar yet. I have TI flats on my 360/12 as well and love them.
We definitely want you to get to playing your new prize, and some pics would be even better. :D

The guitar was still at Rickenbacker this morning. I received a call from their service dept. confirming my return shipping address. It is being shipped back to my local dealer, where my "Non-Ric" tech will set it up for me.

Good luck with your guitar Mike. Hopefully the angst that you are obviously feeling at the moment will be quickly replaced with euphoria when you get it back. :?

I use this same custom TI set on my 66 450/12, my 66 330/12 and my 74 330/12 (21 fretter) with amazing results. They feel very supple and soft. Very low tension

All very well and good.

I try to give help based upon my experience with Ricks, what I see and a good deal of deduction. I don't mind being wrong, but am seldom wrong when I'm actually holding the instrument in my hands.

So, apologies to your tech--good Rick techs are in the minority--the VAST minority. And I'm glad you got it sorted, Mike.

No worries, and I apologize for being a bit touchy about it, because I was really psyched to finally get the ultimate RIC 12 string, but not being able to enjoy it with strings I thought would compliment the beauty of the instrument. On a positive note, I was reimbursed for the cost if the strings by the independent RIC dealer who sold them to me. He even offered to do a setup for me for free, but I would have to ship it and pay all of the expenses. I doubt I'll want use roundwounds for the next five years, so I may eventually bite the bullet and take the risk.

My lead setup tech reports that there was some substance on the truss rod nut that prevented it from working right. We replaced the nut and the rod adjusts as it should. Mike, your strings should be just fine.

That's good news, Ben. Thanks for the update. I was not told that when I spoke with someone named Richard. Looks like I'm just out a set of strings, for which i'm being reimbursed. Do I dare order another set at this point? :D

Richard didn't know about the truss rod when I spoke to him the other day. He was actually wondering why the strings WOULDN'T work...
