Ron, I noticed you also have a 4000 with neck binding. Very cool!

they would be related to the 4001 post-'73 i believe. my MJ-4844 jet had a surface mount, and my buddy has a '74 jet raised, so it's a relevent production change somewhere along the line .

hey, bassduke ! don't forget the surface mount fretboard and raised off fretboard.
Is this what you are looking for, top surface at joint?

ron...moocho greasy arse fer da pic. great detail. i also had a faded autumnglo '79 4000 SH-4113 that i turned into a 4001s, but never paid attention to the glued in slot (even as i was routering the pickup cavity !) sometimes i think i've noticed everything, then i kick myself for missing something so different and obvious . ( i did notice it, but did not analyze the construction details as we all do now...this website is a drug and it's all peter's fault !)

This is a photo of my old '74 4000
I have one exactly like this bass, same finish and even made the same year! Played it just a moment ago. LOVE it!

Here's another top joint shot. Paul B. pointed out that the circle in the middle looks like it could have been from a "C" clamp. The circular mark shows up better on these pics, though it can be noticed on the FG too.

the 4000 set neck has the perfect body cresting wave with the upper and lower horn as it's crafted as one. looks great from the rear view.
