I have to say I love this place you're all so helpful and friendly. Seeing them side-by-side it is easy to see why there is a preference for the smaller headstock.

My '93 330 has the center style.
That's serial # K34666. I thought it seemed odd as well, but the date is correct.

I wasn't really going by dates, I just wanted to show a comparison of big vs small. I thought a matching background would be easier to compare side by side.

Edit: upon checking the register, it's clear that a lot of 355's in 1990 had the smaller headstock.
-Yes, you're right. I forgot that they made the JLs that early...they updated the shape of the 325v63 sometime after the JL Limited Edition. However, the standard line kept the old shape for a long time.

You're right... I didn't mean to imply a change happened between 89 and 90, as I knew that wasn't the case.

Here's a 2007 360 with the new, CNC'd smaller headstock:

These headstock mugshots should be compulsory for every guitar & bass - would be interesting to see the small differences from the eras before the current tooling! Thanks all for sharing - comparing all these I think the current shape's the best one - in size it could maybe be a bit bigger though, although not as big as the really big ones from the 80s.

Yeah, I agree. It's really cool to look at the rounded lower horns on some of the older 330's and imagine the templates wearing out and thus the shape changing slightly.

I should be trying to get similar pictures as I still didn't add my guitars with proper pictures into the register - although my photographic skills are less than existing I'll try to take something decent

The early-to-mid 80s Schallers were the big ones. My AZ blue WB has them; it was built in Nov.`84. Rich''s `79 WB has the big Grovers on it, but then some early 80s Ricks have the tiny headstock and Klusons (Mitch Easter's `82 330) My friend's `83 WB came with big Govers like Rich's.

Interestingly the headstock seems to be the big variety? Or is that just me eyes playing tricks?
