Excellent post! I love your collection. My 2006 c64S has a thinner headstock like your earlier ones do as well. Truly the best feeling neck of any bass I've had. Its fast but not cramped. Thanks for the post!

Addendum

There are two important variations I failed to point out.

The first has to do with the metal covers (horseshoe) positioned over the treble pickup. The horseshoe was originally configured such that the outer (protruding) metal covers were parallel with the body, or flat. See photo.



At some point they were configured differently. The outer cover was formed so it extended outward, or angled outward and away from the strings and pickup. See photo. My best guess is that it happened sometime after the summer of 2006.



The other variation has to do with the neck. Sometime during mid to late 2009, the neck went from a single-piece construction to a two-piece laminate. My 4001C64S has a one-piece neck (manufactured date; week 35 of 2009), whereas my 4001C64 (manufactured date; week 47 of 2009) has the two-piece laminate neck. Both are, obviously, neck-thru-body construction. See photos.

Do the variations correspond to variations in the 4003 of the same year? I have often wondered if a C64 is really just a 4003S with vintage hardware and a reversed headstock. I've never played one, either, so I am just left to wonder.

If you want seven C64 basses, go for it!! Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Everyday you hang onto 10k it's worth less.

Everyday you hang onto 7 c64s they are worth more.

Ricks hold more of their value than many basses, but C64's aren't going up in value from when they were new. I think there's a distinction to be made between holding onto and hording.

The fact that they are now discontinued might just change that.

Ric Neilson and Joe Perry (just to name a few) have hundreds of guitars, including scores of the same model, but because thay are rock stars, nobody calls them hoarders. Whats wrong with average joes collecting several examples of their favorite model?

Who can tell what they will be worth in 10 years? It was about 8 years ago when you could buy a 4002 for $800. Maybe less. Hoarding would would insinuate that the collector would be making it difficult other potential buyers to purchase one. There are several C64 and C64S models new and used, up for sale.
