One point on the authenticity of '60's Azureglo finishes - if I am reading this correctly, Azureglo was only an official factory finish from 1969. Does that mean that there are definitely no genuine factory guitars painted in this colour prior to 1969 or are there known earlier prototypes/trade show guitars etc kicking around? I ask this as I seem to recall reading a thread somewhere about disputed guitars built earlier than '69 where some respected collectors were adamant that they were original Azureglo but this was disputed by others (including IIRC John Hall himself)?

that's a very interesting guitar Andrew - I regularly keep an eye on that German website as they get some rare (but I think pricey) stuff but I hadn't noticed this one before and I cant see it on their "live" Rick listing...is this an archive link for a guitar they already sold?

It is an old ad Eddie. From around 2005/6 IIRC.

In both the ad and the shots above of the other '68 that I did, you can see the color is darker and bluer. This is due to fading of the original AZ and the darkening of the varnish with time.

I have a 1968 365 in Azureglo that I acquired many moons ago, photos on the Register: http://www.rickresource.com/register/vi ... hp?id=7059

The photos aren't as detailed as some of the others above, but hopefully will give you some idea of the "original" color and establish that Azureglo was an available RIC factory finish in 1968.

Yep. That's how it ages.

When I received the 366/12 above from South America, it was exactly the same color as the 365 in Ron's photo. In removing the old finish, My first strokes of sandpaper removed the darkened varnish, and underneath was the original color, which was brighter and more Azure.

AZ as a color made its way into the Rick line, due to a VW that was parked across from the old factory. The color is identical to 1964 VW L360 Sea Blue.

Thanks for the info and the tip, Paul. This is an amazing refinish and a fantastic guitar to play. The jack is probably the cause- it has been wired in reverse, i.e. the mono input is opposite to standard Ricks. It sucked when it starts acting up in the middle of a gig!

Hey Paul, why the heck did they want the original RARE finish stripped off?

If you're referring to the '68 366/12, JB, the instrument was in terrible shape, and needed to have some big splits repaired. It ended up good as new.
