Just curious, Sarah, was your old password something easy? I try to create weird ones and write them down in a little notebook I keep at home, say for example, 7sggHD37&%$er or something equally random, mixing lower/uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. I'll actually write new ones down first, then type them in, since you have to enter them twice. (I'd never remember all that!!!)

And what if you want to check email when on holiday? Do you remember the passwords after a while, or take the notebook with you?

Muscle memory has enabled me to remember the few I might absolutely need. But vacation for me is getting away from the computer.

Amen! And I only have minimal use for a computer in my line of work.

I've been fortunate perhaps in my FB experience. No one that I can discern has attempted to hack my account. And there may be a few good reasons why. Some that I can think of are
  • I don't play Farmville or any other games
    I don't have a hotmail account
    I don't use Outlook Express
My web browser of choice is Firefox
    I have a goofy password
On the other hand, I may be just darned lucky.

Wise to not play anything Zynga, although they are just after your money in a legal albeit deceptive way...

I also use Firefox, with Adblock Plus - lots of userdata get farmed through ads these days, even installing keyloggers onto systems!
And these big anti-virus firms really don't get them all, either...

Heyyyyyy! What's the big idea about posting a photo of my enigma decoder password security device! :x

Now I got to get a new one and he worked for peanuts, dang it all.

Seriously,

Sarah,
So sorry to hear about the Facebook & Hotmai stuff. :( Did you ever find out how they got all your info? Most of the time it is from Facebook (loaded with worms, spyware, & virus attacks) loads something onto your work station that has banking or secure data on it. Then it sends that data to the designated party (someone in Russia or China mostly) and they get hacking your financial accounts. I'm just anti-social and won't belong to even the business networks with "friending" stuff. Had an employee at my Technology Integration business that kept hopping onto Facebook at works after 2 warnings not to. My server picked up a virus, which I caught with our enterprise A/V software (was still hard to stop & remove and it was $1000 piece of software). He had to be let go cuz of that little number. Best way to do that stuff is set up an old computer with NOTHING on it but your info for Facebook or social network stuff. Maybe your personal email you have NOTHING on that is of any value or use against you. Then let that get hacked if they want to. Just keep a bunch of bad recipes and email addresses of people you don't like (or better yet, of spamers that send stuff n stuff to you).

Another good method is pass phrases.. "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" etc. Pass phrases are very hard to crack and are easy to remember. Most passwords can be up to 256 characters long.. thats more than your allowed to twitter as I believe they are capped at 140.

My employer's IT department wants us all to do pass phrases, so I'm starting to get into that habit now.

Many folks tend to use the same simple password for everything, but I try to not do that and keep track of them with my Palm Pilot.

My original passwords were short 5 to 7 character ones with mostly numbers (when they still let you do that), and I eventually started to use them back to back when the requirement for more characters came along.

I think that pass phrases are the way to go since they are easier to remember.

I would add not to run ANY apps on Facebook. They are written by anyone and who knows what holes they create....

+1 Whenever I see a new app in my news I block it asap. I did change my passwords for email and FB into a passphrase. Takes a bit longer to type in correctly though, but I doubt anyone would easily get a random line from a random song - thanks for the advice!
