He plays a 3001 too.

Paul - He was featured in "Bass Guitar Magazine" (No.43) talking about his kit and a new Epiphone Jack Casady bass. I don't have a copy of the article anymore to reference the photo permissions, but the magazine may be able to help out...

I have that issue, I just have to find it! I agree, that contacting Nick Wells at BGM may be your best bet.

I think you're right Ilan.

If it is, it's nice to see that it's being played and professionally to make it even better. When it got sold I thought it might just become a case queen.

I'm not quite so sure - this close up of the horn shows distinctive dark lines which I can't see in the one from Olivia's. It might be the angle though. Interesting.

That's a different angle, Mark. The maple that RIC uses for the 4004Cii has figure patterns that seem to have varying degrees of intensity when you look at it from different angles or when you change the lighting. Sometimes when you are holding a Cii and turn it, it looks like the figure is moving, fading and intensifying. So it's possible that it's the same Cii.

He definitely would have had a hard job getting that in the UK.

Just after a nice message from Andy he said it would be ok to post on the RRF. Message as follows.

QUOTE;
I had no idea that there were so many people interested in my choice of axe... Well, the 4004 cii in Montezuma Brown may well be the one in your picture, it looks very similar! Certainly the pickup being in the "wrong" place is a very distinctive feature-and it's my favourite thing about it. Makes a huge difference to the sound. To cut a long story short, just before joining the Weller band, I had paid a considerable sum of money for a 4004 cii in Translucent Red (I think you put up a pic of me wielding this bass wearing a very stripy shirt!) and as 4004 models of any description are very hard to come by in the UK, I put the feelers out for a spare when I started touring. An American friend of mine secured a Montezuma Brown 4004 cii for me for less than a third of what I had paid for the Trans Red model in the UK. It may well have come from Ebay, I know he dabbles..! He assured me it was "amazing" and through channels that shall remain clouded in secrecy and mystery, it found its way to me. Since then, it's been my constant companion and bass of choice when I'm out with Paul Weller- three and a half times round the world in a little over two years! Teamed up with Marshall VBA 400 heads and a custom-made Marshall 8x10 cabinet, it's a mighty thing indeed. It's a little more restrained than a 4001 or 4003, and has a "slightly ******-off Jazz Bass" sound to it when played with the fingers, but stacks of Ricky clank when played agressively with a pick, so it suits what we do with Weller. The Trans-Red cii has been relegated to the position of spare. So much for all the cash I lavished upon it!

You might also like to know that I have a 3001, a 4001/8 and a 360/12 in my collection. The 3001 I adore, and would dearly love a spare one to take on the road. You can hear it in action on the opening track on my new mini album "41", available on iTunes, as well as on my hit single of 2007, "Are You Trying To Be Lonely?".

Best regards- andy
