Agreed. That's one of the reasons I said that this was all wrong on so many levels.

I bet your average kid in 1964 had NO idea who Al Jolson and Bix Beiderbecke were......so we can't get into the old age debate. That just turns into "damn kids these days...get off my lawn."

I know I'm speculating, but I think Lennon might not have cared. He was notoriously ambivalent about his work with the Beatles. Wasn't as sacred to him as to other people, which I can understand.

How ironic.

For 40 years I heard music critics severely pan McCartney for his 'commercialism'.

And now, it's playing out that John Lennon, even in death, 'out-commercializes' him.

Where are those critics now?

Shouldn't Paul be doing these things?

Now THAT'S what I would imagine Lennon saying!

They manipulated his image AND voice (stiched sound fragments together) for the video.

btw - Yoko must have approved it. It is her call on how John gets used for better or worse. Not taking a stand either way just saying...

Yeah, you know -- Lennon was such a saint when it came to kids, having completely abandoned his first child and all.

and usually for worse. If there's a quick buck to be made off of John's memory Yoko is always there with floppy hat in hand.

I know this is total sidebar, but that's one thing about Lennon that always bugged me is how he treated Julian. He made such a big deal about how special Sean was, got this life together to be a good father, etc... meanwhile Julian is SOL. It took McCartney to step forward and write a song for him.

Yeah, in general --- he wasn't a very nice dude, and it always bothers me to see people elevate him to god-like status.

He was a musical genius...but the buck stops there, imo.

I mean, c'mon....look at how often he made fun of the mentally retarded:

That is extremely uncool.

Like the musical genius tag isn't true 100% all the time (there are some serious lapses in quality), the total-nice-guy or total-nasty-guy is also not true. He became a peacenik after being a violent teddy boy, he became a doting father after being an absent one, he became a husband after being an abuser. A person starts somewhere and ends somewhere, as long as the trajectory is upwards we can call it development. Lennon is not unique in his social upbringing or his violent responses to them. I know several people who have tread the same flawed path, but they didn't write Strawberry Fields. He was special. It's not justifying it, it just is.

The gurning cruelty is in a period context, Lennon devoured The Goons. At school we used to call each other names based on what was the most awful affliction - spastic, thalidomide etc. they probably still do. We laugh most at the things that frighten us.

Like any religion, Lennon is a "thing" where we can pick and choose the bits we like or don't like and he's not here to argue with it - and that still makes me feel sad.
