I'm all for people modding their Rics to get whatever tone or aesthetics they dream of but, I must say, that I'm not a fan of making the 4004s look like 4003s or giving them a retro look. I never much cared for the so called "4-2-5" shenanigans either......especially on 4004s (my favorite Ric). Just my opinion......

Except for me, I love mine! I'll take at least another two Cii's!

Me too! My Laredo is by far my go to bass.
I meant none of the Geddy's looked like this, Paul's like that, the screws must be made out of 32.87% material X, the bevel must be exactly 46% or THIS BASS ISN'T RIGHT attachment that goes on with the 4000,4001 and even 4003s. 4004s are just always right.

I'm not a purist, with the exception of my CS. My main Ric has had one machine head, the TRC, frets, pickguard, pickups, knobs, bridge, and strap pins replaced.
Like many others have said - mods can range from awesome to horrendous. "I think I'll just round-over this portion of checkerboard binding."

And me three! My 4004Cii Mapleglo is my main baby, and I just picked up a second Cii today. I'm stuck working 12-hour shifts the next 3 nights, but I will post pix of my flamey new purple Cii on Monday. Yes, I said purple...

Uh... no, we're not? At least I'm not.
Every one of my Rics is modded or has been worked on. I usually keep my mods tasteful--usually--but I don't condemn those who go radical. Whatever works. I do think sometimes it's possible to mod before getting to know an instrument and you kind of miss the point--you might have liked it stock. But if you know it has to be modded after some time with it then I understand.

I don't mind mods that are done well I think you hit the nail on the head when the word stunning was used. When I got mine all those years ago it was modded. Luckily the mod was tastefully done and can be reversed. Which will be happening shortly thanks to the members of the forum!

Im not "name calling" cassius. I'm just like you, much more of a player than a collector, If I can tweak my bass into a better playing instrument that suites my playing, Im gonna do it.
This is just an observation I've made over the years involving countless post's concerning "modded" Ricks turning up for sale on Ebay ect... If a really bad mod comes up for sale, we're generally all over it.

You have an avatar of a Japanese Hornet and you're talking vivisection? Have you seen what those do to bees?

Oh, I know I'm all over it but not in the way you mean.
I love the modded up Ricks mainly because someone has devalued it and I can likely get it cheaper than another "mint" one that I'd then soon devalue by strumming it roughly.

Anyone can do anything they want to anything they pay for.
For my part, I won't make any mod to a bass that cannot be reversed.

I as one who owns two modified Rics (see Newbie logon). My guitars have suited me well for over 35 and 30 years each and I love (aah) both of them dearly. However, I'm convinced that they are not "butchered" in that the mods (by design) are easily reversible.

you buy it, it's yours to do with as you please... taste is very subjective. I have a 4004L which is now an 8 string. I guess it could be returned to the 4 string version with a little cash... but why would you want to do that?

Nicely done, Tom! I think If I wanted an 8-string bad enough, that would be a great way to go! I might choose a 4003 instead, but that's just a matter of opinion.

Isn't it ironic that the 4004 basses have such beautiful wood and some think a pickguard covering up that wood and putting screw holes in the gorgeous top is a good thing?
For some, maybe....I'm not down. Have at it, though, it's YOUR bass.
