IIRC the footswitch simply switches between channels or switches the reverb off and on. I did not buy a footswitch so I cannot tell you how well it works. There is not a tremelo channel on the VR. That did not bother me because I never used that function on my old amp at all. I am not a big fan of the tremelo effect.
As you can see the Tonelab ST has a foot control on the pedal which can easily be assigned as a volume control.
As a guitar player I tend to throttle back my volume for lead/rhythm using the controls on the guitar and when I need to increase volume for a lead solo then I simply roll the volume knob up a tad. When I play a Strat or my V64 (it has been re-wired to provide a master volume control) I use my little finger on my right hand to make that adjustment. When I play my 330 or my 350........ well I have to roll two controls forward a notch or two.
